Perhaps, no group of drugs has so many supporters and as many ardent opponents as antibiotics. Range of opinions on these drugs – from «antibiotics can cure everything» to «anything, but antibiotics!». If you ask doctor to judge both of them, expert’s verdict will be unequivocal: apologists and opponents are equally mistaken, such information was acquired by Canadian Pharmacy experts.
A Bit of History
Discovery and widespread introduction into medical practice of antibiotics – substances of biological origin, capable of suppressing growth of microorganisms or causing their death – was seen as revolution in medicine. Author of «discovery of the century», Englishman Fleming, at first seemed not to be aware of scale of his discovery, made by him in 1928. Synthesis of penicillin made possible treatment of previously fatal infectious diseases: pneumonia, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, etc. Antibiotics were fully appreciated during the Second World War, when doctors began to save millions of wounded soldiers. People stopped dying from wound infection!
Needless to say, antibiotics have become faithful assistants of doctors in struggle for lives of patients. Several generations literally grew on antibiotics, they got used to the fact that these drugs help, as they say, «at first sneeze». And – began to make a common mistake, prescribe treatment by themselves. Usual «-cillines», «-cyclines», «-micines», etc. many people began to acquire in pharmacies without recommendation of doctor… and after a while were disappointed in action of antibiotic. «Oddly, but this drug used to help so well earlier, and now it has absolutely no effect!» – such complaints about antibiotics became a talk in the streets. Alas, few complaining people know that it’s not about the drug at all…
Did You Know?..
Antibiotics are substances of natural or semi-synthetic origin that cause death of bacteria and microbes. In addition to pathogenic microorganisms, they affect natural microflora of the body.
Typically, doctor prescribes antibiotic treatment when patient is confirmed to have bacterial infection. It is for this reason in no case you shouldn’t «prescribe» antibiotic to yourself with slight runny nose or sore throat, which appeared as a result of a walk in autumn wind and ended in overcooling the body. You may get rid of symptoms of the disease, but common runny nose, hiding for a while, can develop into an unpleasant problem – sinusitis, and a slight cough – turn into protracted bronchitis. It is necessary to know: antibiotic is prescribed only by doctor, his recommendations for dosage and interval of taking the drug must be adhered to unswervingly! Otherwise, resistance of the body to one or another antibiotic may occur. Strictly speaking, resistance is the main reason for alleged «inefficiency» of antibiotics. And fans of self-treatment achieve this state with their own hands!
Side Effects of Antibiotics
In addition, improper intake of antibiotics can result in various side effects. Even in practically healthy people, antibiotics can cause nausea, feeling of dryness in the mouth, discomfort in stomach. This is due to negative influence of antibiotic on intestinal microflora and possible development of dysbiosis – gradual replacement of normal representatives of intestinal microflora (bifido- and lactobacilli, enterococci, etc.) by pathogenic. If you remember that almost 80% of human immunity «lives» in intestine (it produces necessary for proper functioning of immune system substances), it is not hard to imagine what consequences may appear.
To minimize possible harm from antibiotic therapy, doctors from the first day prescribe means that support composition of intestinal microflora from group of probiotics, for example a complex of natural microorganisms, which helps to strengthen immunity, reduce risk of developing colds and flu. The very term «probiotic» (pro – for, bios – life) is an antonym of «antibiotic». Canadian Pharmacy experts emphasize that probiotics contribute to production of immunoglobulin protein, which has beneficial effect on functioning of human immune system and is important not only during antibiotic treatment, but also in the process of recovery from previous illness.
The main thing to remember about: antibiotics are a «heavy artillery» and can be used not more than once in six months, otherwise the body «gets used» to the drug and requires more and more powerful antibiotics, which, accordingly, have multiple side effects. Prolonged reception of an antibiotic leads to lesions of digestive tract, immune system and development of dysbiosis. Therefore, self-medication with antibiotics is unacceptable! So do not try to buy antibiotics over the counter in pharmacies. If you think that body is not able to cope with the disease on its own, consult a doctor and take only appointed by him medications.
