Propecia (Finasteride) also is used by men to stimulate hair growth. If hair growth is going to occur with the use of Propecia, it usually occurs after the medicine has been used for about 3 months and lasts only as long as the medicine continues to be used. The new hair will be lost within 1 year after finasteride treatment is stopped.
Propecia prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, which is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hair loss.
Propecia (Finasteride) is used for treatment of male pattern hair loss.
Dosage and Administration
Propecia should be taken orally without regard to meal on a regular schedule as prescribed.
You may have to take this medicine for at least 3 months to see an effect. The effect will last only as long as the medicine continues to be used. The new hair will be lost within 1 year after Propecia is stopped.
If you miss a dose, take this medicine as soon as possible. Then go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
- Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
- Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
Warning and Precautions
Do not use Propecia if:
- You have an unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines
- Pregnancy category X.
- Breastfeeding. There are no adequate studies in women for determining infant risk when using this medication during breastfeeding.
Before using Propecia, you should tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver disease, prostate cancer, urinary tract disease, drug allergies. The drug can be absorbed through the skin. If the tablet has been broken or the tablet crushed, it should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or plans to become pregnant.
Propecia is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensivity to any component of the formulation.
Along with desirable effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects
- Breast enlargement and tenderness
- Skin rash
- Swelling of lips
Note: Breast enlargement and tenderness, skin rash and swelling of lips are more likely to occur with the 5-mg dose.
