Is Diabetes a Risk Factor for Alzheimer’s Disease
Researchers have known for a while that diabetic patients are at greater risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other forms of dementia than those without diabetes, but the exact cause of this link has not been known. A study published in February 2004 suggested that insulin resistance in brain cells might affect their function, causing some of the biochemical changes typically seen in AD.
In a more recent 5.5-year study of 824 Roman Catholic nuns, brothers, and priests who were at least 55 years old, diabetic subjects were 65% more likely to develop AD than nondiabetic patients, said researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. lipitor 40 mg
The study did not show that everyone with AD had diabetes or that everyone with diabetes would eventually have signs of AD, but the findings did produce a strong argument for controlling blood glucose levels.
