Azacitidine Fights Bone Marrow Illness

The Pharmion Corporation has announced the approval of azacitidine for injectable suspension (Vidaza™) to treat a cancer-like, bone-marrow illness that sometimes progresses to leukemia.

Vidaza™ is used to treat myelodys-plastic syndromes, a collection of disorders in which the bone marrow does not make enough normal blood cells.

Pharmion will have as much as a seven-year monopoly on treating the disease because Vidaza™, which has been granted orphan-drug status by the FDA, combats a relatively rare condition.
