Pittsburgh Study About Effectiveness Of Asthma Medication In The Common Cold
At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in San Diego new investigation is presented. The aim of the study conducted by physicians in the Division of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) in Pittsburgh was to reveal if Singulair (Montelukast) drug may provide relief for the common cold.
Singulair 10 mg is used in treating asthma and allergies. The double-blinded study involved 81 patients who had a cold. The participants were divided into two groups: 40 received Montelukast tablets and 41 received a placebo. The period of treatment lasted 5 days, after what participants were required to answer the questions about their state of health on each of those five days.
Besides, the specialists weighed the tissue papers of all participants. The result was that the weight of the bags with tissues of patients taking generic Singulair was less than of those received a placebo.
Dr. Deborah Gentile , MD, study lead investigator, and director of research, AGH Division of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology explained that Singulair tablets shortened the duration of the cold in half. The specialist said that this kind of asthma and allergies medications blocked the effects of leukotrienes. Thus, blocking leukotrienes caused reducing or preventing the common cold.
Due to the study it was fount out that Singulair drug, the best allergy medicine, gives a faster resolution of signs and symptoms of the common cold.
Physicians are planning to investigate if Montelukast asthma and allergy medicine may prevent complications of the common cold, for example wheezing and asthma, ear and sinus infections. Future studies will need to examine more patients.
