FDA Panel Decided To Keep Avandia (Rosiglitazone) On The Market

It has been known that yesterday an advisory committee to the federal agency voted to keep the Rosiglitazone diabetes on the market. In addition, some FDA officials, including Dr David Graham, a drug safety officer with the agency and senior FDA official, Dr Gerald Dal Pan, who directs the FDA’s surveillance and epidemiology office, voted for Rosiglitazone generic to be taken off the market.
In its turn, GlaxoSmithKline suggested that none of the studies submitted to the FDA showed that Avandia medication exposed to greater risk of dying than other drugs and placebo.
Finally, the panel came to a conclusion that taking generic Avandia off from the market would deny a benefit to patients with few other options and it would be better to keep it. Moreover, the FDA experts are likely to change the warning on the drug: not to prescribe Avandia diabetes medication to patients with cardiovascular disease or congestive heart failure and to patients with angina who are taking nitrate based medication and who have been on insulin for a long time.
