FDA Panel Decided To Keep Avandia (Rosiglitazone) On The Market

An oral drug generic Avandia is related to the thiazolidinedione class of diabetes drugs. Made by GlaxoSmithKline this drug is used by around 1 million Americans in treating diabetes to control their blood sugar.
It has been known that yesterday an advisory committee to the federal agency voted to keep the Rosiglitazone diabetes on the market. A discussion divided officials within the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). By the way, some experts considered that Avandia drug raised the risk of heart attack and other heart problems. It was proved by the date from research studies where they found Avandia 4 mg increased the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular events by up to 40 per cent in patients having type 2 diabetes.
The chairman of the FDA advisory committee, Dr Clifford J Rosen of St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine, contraindicated Avandia medication for patients with congestive heart failure, a history of cardiovascular disease, or who are taking insulin or nitrates.
In addition, some FDA officials, including Dr David Graham, a drug safety officer with the agency and senior FDA official, Dr Gerald Dal Pan, who directs the FDA’s surveillance and epidemiology office, voted for Rosiglitazone generic to be taken off the market.
In its turn, GlaxoSmithKline suggested that none of the studies submitted to the FDA showed that Avandia medication exposed to greater risk of dying than other drugs and placebo.
Finally, the panel came to a conclusion that taking generic Avandia off from the market would deny a benefit to patients with few other options and it would be better to keep it. Moreover, the FDA experts are likely to change the warning on the drug: not to prescribe Avandia diabetes medication to patients with cardiovascular disease or congestive heart failure and to patients with angina who are taking nitrate based medication and who have been on insulin for a long time.
