According to new facts of Value in Health, the newer antipsychotic Zyprexa (Olanzapine) may not result in cost savings comparing with an older, inexpensive generic antipsychotic in treating of schizophrenia disease. It was revealed that despite higher medication costs of Zyprexa tablets the difference in one-year direct total costs between this kind of schizophrenia medication and conventional antipsychotics was small and not statistically significant.

The object of investigation was to compare  the cost-effectiveness of Zyprexa 10 mg and generic Risperdal (Risperidone) as first-line treatment for bipolar schizophrenia. The researchers were also aimed to help inform private and public payer systems’ practices and policies regarding first-line antipsychotic options for treating schizophrenia disease.

Ralph Aquila, M.D., one of twenty-one study investigators who is the director of residential community services at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital Center suggested that the overall direct costs of treating a person with schizophrenia for one year were essentially the same regardless of whether a person was initiated on a conventional or atypical antipsychotic. In fact, the study showed that the total costs associated with the two medications were similar and not significantly different from each other.

The results indicate that any savings on medication costs were offset by the increased costs of other services associated with treatment with conventional antipsychotic drugs including hospitalizations, crisis interventions and emergency room visits.

To Dr. Aquila’s mind, finding the most effective antipsychotic medicine for each patient is critical, because the cases of relapse for patients and their families can be harassing. The best solution can be the most effective treatment for each individual patient. This may help them stay on that treatment longer which can have better influence and better results.
