In gerd treatment Lansoprazole generic is considered to be a proton pump inhibitor which stops gastric acid production. It has recently revealed that Prevacid medication can cause chronic watery diarrhea unresponsive to conventional medication as a symptom of collagenous colitis. This fact is known not by all doctors, who prescribe Lansoprazole capsules for chronic use in gastroesophageal reflux disease. As a result – wrong diagnosis and treatment.

For example, one old woman had interstitial pneumonia at 67 and reflux esophagitis at 70. She was certainly prescribed Lansoprazole 30 mg/day for reflux esophagitis for nearly 6 months. And as she had watery diarrhea 4 to 9 times a day, Prevacid medication was discontinued and Sulfasalazine 2 g/day was started, because colonoscopy showed diffuse cloudiness of the mucosa which suggested ulcerative colitis.  The effect was evident: the next day the woman’s sufferings were over. Five months later the diarrhea recurred. The decisions of colonoscopy and histology were the same as before confirming a diagnosis of collagenous colitis relapse. It was found out that she resumed taking cheap Prevacid. In order to solve the diarrhea promptly Lansoprazole medication was withdrawn again. Similar to the first episode Endoscopic and histological abnormalities were fully decided. The date of beginnig of Sulfasalazine treatment and the withdrawal of Lansoprazole generic in the first episode was obviously the same. In this case one can reveal the associations of Lansoprazole drug with collagenous colitis.

Therefore, knowledge of drugs’ side effects is important. A doctor and a patient must take into account that Prevacid drug in chronic use can cause chronic diarrhea as a symptom of collagenous colitis. However, it might be uneasy to suppose this side effect symptoms in chronic use of  Lansoprazole drug.
